TEHRAN (Asremrooz): "If the behavior of the United States is the same as it was before, I don't think it (direct talks with Iran) would happen,” Ali Akbar Velayati, who is a top international adviser to Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, said in an exclusive interview with AP on Monday.

He also took a swipe at the US policy makers for their paradoxical behavior towards Iran, and said, “They (Americans) have to come down from their position. They still believe that they are a superpower.”

He called on western countries to modify their approach toward Iran after the election of President Rouhani, who follows a "moderate policy", saying "repeating the same language that we had before ... will not be useful."

Velayati’s remarks came a few weeks after Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei had said that he is not optimistic about negotiations with the United States since the US officials are illogical.

Addressing a group of Iranian officials here in Tehran on July 22, Ayatollah Khamenei pointed to the recent remarks by US officials on negotiation with Iran, and said he has on many occasions stressed that he is not optimistic about negotiations with the US.

“The Americans are not trustworthy, they are illogical, and they are not frank in their interactions,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.
