In threshold of Imam Hassan’s Birthday, we have an opportunity to explain about the reasons of peace. Because here are some doubts about Imam’s act that may reduce people faithfulness and Islam ‘s enemies including Zionist, Wahhabi, Baha’i and Jewish misuse it.
Imam Hassan assumed the responsibility of the Imamate after the martyrdom of his father, and the people of Kufa gave him the pledge of fealty. He addressed a large congregation of believers in the mosque and reminded them of the stand his father had taken in upholding the Truth, and that he would not change his course of conduct in any other way. He also reminded them of the deceitful way in which they were deprived of their victory over Mu’awiyah, the defiant governor of Syria. He strongly urged them to search their hearts if they wished to achieve a stable and pious way of life under his rule.
Umavian party’s intrigues, sending spies to Sham, using gold and silver to pay the elders of tribes ‘ attention and lack of obedience of Imam’s supporters led to the peace treaty between Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) and Mu’awiyah .
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) as well as Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) were annoyed by them as Imam Ali Said “ I swear God , I like to have business with Muawiyeh and he give me a solider and take ten soldiers”.
However, Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) forced to accept the peace treaty. The reasons of this decision are so clear but unfortunately some have wrong analysts about it. For example:
New Caliph (Imam Hassan)in contrast his father (Imam Ali ) try to enjoy in his house so he sent only 12 thousand soldiers in war then spent his time in garden he was thinking weather he fight.
It must be considered that Imam forced to accept the peace in order to survive Ahle beyt and pure companions. If he fought he would defeat Although there were some true believers in the army, many others had joined in for the sake of war spoils and with divided loyalties. Therefore Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) and his brother were arrested and Muawiyed would killed them because his uncle, brother and grandfather were killed by Imam Ali (peace be upon him).
Mu'awiya made this plan of his when the two parties were getting ready to wage war against each other. He paid attention to carry out this plan more than he paid attention to organizing his armies and managing war affairs. He thought that it was better for him to be the first to ask Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) for making peace with him. If Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) accepted his request, it would be okay; otherwise he would force him to do that without meeting him at a battle.
THE PEACE TREATY
1. Handing over authority to Mu’awiyah provided that he should act according to the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Apostle, and the Sira (the conduct of life) of the righteous Caliphs.
2. "The authority should be for Imam Hassan after him (Mu’awiyah). If an accident happened to him (Imam Hassan), the authority should be for his brother Imam Hussein. Mu’awiyah has no right to entrust anybody (else) to it."
3. "He (Mu’awiyah) should abandon cursing the Commander of the faithful (Ali) as well as the practice of using personal prayer (Qunut) against him (Imam Hassan) in Salat (the prescribed ritual prayers), and that he should not mention the name of All except in good manner."
4. "He (Mu’awiyah) should keep excluded what is 'in the treasury of Kufa, that is five million (dirhwns). So, handing over the authority does not include it (the sum of this money). Mu’awiyah should send al-Hassan one million dirham per year, he should prefer banu Hashirn in giving and gifts to banu Abd ash-Shams
5. He should divide one million (dirham) among the sons of those who were killed helping the Commander of the faithful (Ali) in the Battle of the Camel and the Battle of Siffeen and should spend that from the taxes of Dar Abjard."
6. The people should be safe wherever they are in the earth of Allah; in Sham (Syria), Iraq, Hijaz, Yemen, etc. He should give security to the black and the red alike. He (Mu’awiyah) should bear their slips, should not follow some of them for the bygone, nor should he punish the Iraqis foe hostility."
7. The companions of Ali should be given security wherever they are; that he (Mu’awiyah) should not expose them to any evil; that they should be given security over their lives, their properties and women and children; and that he should give them their rights.
8. He (Mu’awiyah) should not seek a calamity secretly or openly for Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) or his brother Imam Hussein (peace be upon him), nor for anyone from the progeny of Ahle Bait of the Apostle of Allah, nor should he frighten them in any country or territories.
Many historians have related that the text of this Peace Treaty was conveyed to Mu’awiyah who read this in his court, and made a covenant with Allah to fulfill the conditions stipulated by Imam Hassan. It was not long after this event that Mu’awiyah went back from his part of the covenant with Allah and put the Peace Treaty aside. He took pleasure in demeaning the Imam just as he had been doing to his father. The Imam decided to leave Kufa and return to Madinah.
Martyr Morteza Motahari explained about the difference between the condition of Imam Hassan And Imam Hussein (peace be upon them) “ Imam Hassan and Hussein (peace be upon him)had different political situation. There are three main factors for Imam Hussein upraising that they were in various shape in Imam Hassan term.
• The first factor was that the oppression government wanted allegiance. Take Hussein allegiance, tightly, definitely but Imam Hussein did not agree. What about Imam Hassan (peace be upon him), allegiance is a peace treaty.
• The second factor was Kufian’s invitation. They could not tolerate Muawiyeh’s oppression. Some believed that Kufa was really prepared but an event changed everything. They wrote 18000 letters to Imam Hussein and announced their preparation but he came and they did not help him. Some believe that the situation was not ready but if Imam Hussein did not accept their invitation definitely he would be accused in history. He could not ignore this preparation.
• In contrast, in Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) term Kuffian were exhausted and upset. There were too much various ideas as Imam Ail (peace be upon him) on the last days of his life repeatedly complained them and said “Oh God die me”. Kuffian indicated that we are not ready, the situation was so dangerous and non-suitable that Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) was afraid some of them and when he prepared for saying pray in mosque he wore armor because there was a danger of killing him. Once he was praying that it was shooting toward him but he survived.
• The third factor was enjoining the good and forbidding the bad. Muawiyed has acted against Islam for 20 years; he has changed Islamic rules, spent Muslims properties, killed Muslims, and determined his gambler son to be king.
Muawiyed said “ I just want to try Othman’ s killer, I will act base on the prophet’s rule, I want to improve the condition and solve the problems and I will accept all the condition”.
If imam Hassan (peace be upon him) did not accept peace the war would continue for two years there for so many people were killed, many places were destroyed, Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) was killed too an finally today people blame him and say he must accept peace. The holy prophet accepted peace too. Muawiyed wanted to govern himself, he does not want your allegiance, he signs all Shias are safe, he forgets pasts and he put some part of properties to you and your accompanies. He won politically and when he came Kufa he said “ o people I has not fought with you for Pray, fast Haj and so on, I fought for being governor. They are your duties and I do not insist on them.
