The 2nd Asian Youth Games are being held in Nanjing, from August 16–24, 2013. Just like the inaugural edition, the games will serve as a dress-rehearsal for the upcoming 2014 Summer Youth Olympics, which will also be held in the same city.

AYG (Asian Youth Games) is a multi-sports event subordinate to OCA (Olympic Council of Asia) and is held every four years. AYG becomes the 5th multi-sports event held every four years under OCA. In response to the International Olympic Council’s decision of holding Youth Olympics, OCA set up AYG, aiming to enhance communications and exchanges between the youth from different countries and regions of Asia, to promote the Olympic spirit among the Asian youth, and to encourage them to be more actively engaged in sports, cultural and educational activities for developing a healthy living style. The multi-sports event is held every four years. In 2008, OCA decided to award the hosting of the first Asian Youth Games 2009 to Singapore.

The inaugural AYG Singapore 2009 was successfully held and witnessed a gathering of athletes aged between 14 and 17 competing in 90 events across nine sports from June 29th to July 7th, 2009. Altogether 3000 athletes and officials from 45 national and regional Olympic committees in Asia attended this grand event. The expenditure of AYG Singapore was mainly sponsored by the government with little subsidy from OCA.
